aaline systems
Aaline is a system of certified modular architectural lighting and acoustic solutions designed to enhance and perform in any space. The entire product family was designed and manufactured with FSC certified Canadian hardwood in Toronto by a group of designers, architects and craftsmen. Certain models are CSA certified.
The aaline product family was featured in the Toronto IDS20 concept house, “RESET Home”. Custom solutions for lighting, sound and installation were collaboratively worked upon with VFA // Architecture + Design to create the final environment.
CSA Certification
As I was brought onto the project late into the design process, I was put as lead for bringing the product family to be certified by the CSA. This process involved redesigning the internal components of the fixtures, as well as preparing documentation to provide to the CSA officials for approval.
aaline Product Family Catalog
During the CSA approval process, I also worked simultaneously on creating material and compiling the catalog that would be distributed as promotional and informational material to contractors, architects and designers. The catalog included renderings, products shots and technical information.
Manufacturing the Lights
When we obtained the CSA approval for our based models in the product family, we began designing a jig for mass production. Every order would be produced and assembled in-house by a small team of craftsmen and designers, so efficiency and cost-effectiveness were important. The jig should allow for easy loading and loading of the CNC bed and provide as much accuracy as possible. Our final design for the jig was a lever-clamp system with modular fences to allow for the production of our “singles”, “doubles”, and “triples” lights.
Acoustic panels
In addition to lighting products, the aaline family also includes acoustic solutions for institutional and private spaces. Unlike with the lighting, I saw through the development of the acoustic panels from the beginning to the launch of the products.
